Careers in Virginia Have Top Market

Although the economy continues to decline in almost every corner of the nation, those looking for a career in Virginia recently got some good news.

According to an article by Southern Business and Development Magazine, the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor statistics ranked Virginia Beach as the top market in the country for job growth between October 2007 and 2008. Virginia Beach saw 17,000 jobs created during that time, an increase of 2.2 percent.

The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News area had an unemployment rate of 5.3 percent during December 2008, according to the BLS. This is up from 4.8 percent during November 2008, but lower than the national unemployment rate of 7.2 percent.

The Virginia Beach area saw a total non-farm employment of 788,700 workers during December, down from 790,100 workers during November, but a 1 percent increase from last year.

The industries that saw an over-the-year increase in employment during December included:

  • natural resources, mining and construction by 1 percent
  • financial activities by 1 percent
  • professional and business services by 2 percent
  • education and health services by 3.3 percent
  • leisure and hospitality by 3 percent
  • other services by 6.5 percent
  • government by 1.2 percent
  • The only industries in the area that saw an over-the-year decrease in jobs during December were manufacturing by 1.8 percent; trade, transportation and utilities by 2.3 percent and information by 3.8 percent.

    The State of Virginia as a whole also saw it’s unemployment rate increase, from 4.8 percent during November to 5.4 percent during December. Virginia had a total non-farm employment of 3,743,900 workers during December, down from 3,764,800 workers during November and a .8 percent decrease from last year.
