Apprenticeships to create Pennsylvania jobs

A new training program is connecting workers with Pennsylvania jobs.
The state announced a new apprenticeship training program at Penn College of Technology in Williamsport as part of National Apprenticeship Week.
The Wolf Administration supports the growth and expansion of apprenticeship programs as a viable way to develop a pool of high-skilled, qualified talent for employers,” said Deputy Secretary Cipriani. “Creating new apprenticeship programs, such as the ones we announced today, not only helps meet regional employment needs, but provides job seekers with valuable hands-on training that leads to family-sustaining jobs.”
The Wolf Administration established the Apprenticeship and Training Office (ATO) last year to support and expand apprenticeships. Programs registered through the office provide employer-driven training to create a more productive, diverse, highly skilled workforce for employers and to help reduce employee turnover. Job seekers receive increased skills and a nationally recognized credential to support future career advancement and increased wages.
Since the office was created, 2,610 new apprentices and 81 new registered apprenticeship occupations statewide have been created. The Penn College apprenticeship programs will focus on mechatronics and CNC occupations.
“Many companies have fewer than ten identified apprentices, making it a burden for them to host a stand-alone program,” noted Shannon Munro, vice president for workforce development at Penn College. “This model, with Penn College as the sponsor, solves that challenge while incorporating flexible, innovative methods for training delivery that minimizes work disruption and other expenses.”
After the tour concluded, Deputy Secretary Cipriani formally announced the ATO’s approval of a new mechatronics technician and CNC operator apprenticeships at Penn College of Technology. She was joined by staff and representatives from the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Corporation.
The two programs are slated to begin in the first quarter of 2018 with a projected eight total companies involved between the two occupations.
