Washington Healthcare Jobs Cut

Washington County Health System is in the process of slashing Washington healthcare jobs.

According to Herald-Mail.com, Washington County Health System is cutting 36 jobs, or about 1 percent of its work force, President and CEO James P. Hamill said Wednesday.

He said the volume of patients throughout the system has dropped 5 to 10 percent.

The decline over the last four or five months is “a reflection of the economy,” which hospitals elsewhere are experiencing, too, Hamill said.

Manufacturing Jobs in Virginia at Risk

Northrop Grumman Corp. has informed the Virginia Employment Commission that manufacturing jobs in Virginia are at risk if its logistics contract there is not renewed.

According to Washington Biz Journals.com, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) is required in the event of any potential large layoffs.

The current Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) contract expires June 30. Under the contract, the company provides maintenance, supply, transportation and food services at Fort Eustis.

HHGregg Adds Retail Jobs in Maryland

Several of the empty Circuit City buildings are now occupied by HHGregg, which will create over 300 new retail jobs in Maryland.

According to WBALTV.com, appliance and electronics retailer HHGregg opened six stores on Thursday afternoon, and some said it’s a sign of an economic rebound.

“The Baltimore market, we feel, is right for our style of service,” said HHGregg Chief Executive Officer Dennis May.

One local economist said it is good timing. Last month, consumers spent more on electronics than in previous months.

Thousands of Technical Jobs in Washington, D.C. Added

Tech firms have been flocking to the DC area in droves, adding thousands of technical jobs in Washington, D.C. (click here).

According to statistics from industry advocate TechAmerica, the high-tech industry in Washington, Maryland and Virginia has added close to 100,000 jobs over the past decade.

Case in point is Composite Software, profiled in a recent article by the Washington Post.
