Some Washington DC Government Jobs Spared

City officials are doing their part to help save Washington DC government jobs by working to balance the upcoming budget, but not all positions will be spared.

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty recently submitted his plan to close the projected $453 million budget gap this year and next year’s projected $150 million budget gap. During June, the Office of the Chief Financial Officer predicted the city could face additional budget deficits.

“My administration has taken action to address the District’s deficit, exploring all possible options,” Fenty said. “Our proposed plan not only balances the budget but also protects critical services for District residents.”

Pennsylvania Government Jobs Affected Locally

While Pennsylvania government jobs are seeing an increase from last year, state budget cuts could affect jobs with smaller community governments.

Pennsylvania’s government industry employed 746,600 workers during November of 2008, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 748,600 workers in October but an increase of .4 percent from last year.

The County Commissioners Association recently met in Hershey, Pa. to discuss the fact that state budget cuts could begin to affect people’s jobs, according to an article by The Clarion News.

Washington D.C. Government Jobs Could Grow During Recession

While the current possibility of an economic recession has many Americans losing sleep, a new study finds that a recession could actually result in more Washington D.C. government jobs.

Many Americans, whether tied to Wall Street or not, are worried about their futures as 401K plans are unstable, foreclosures are abundant and both big cities and small towns are trying to adapt to this new market. Businessweek recently published an article on a study it completed, with data from PolicyMap, to determine the best places to live during a recession. In most of these places, the majority of the population works in government, healthcare, education, agriculture and legal services.

Washington D.C.
came in as the second best place to live during a recession, behind Arlington, Va. In recent months, the economy has continued to add more jobs to Washington’s workforce.
