Manufacturing Jobs in Virginia at Risk

Northrop Grumman Corp. has informed the Virginia Employment Commission that manufacturing jobs in Virginia are at risk if its logistics contract there is not renewed.

According to Washington Biz Journals.com, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) is required in the event of any potential large layoffs.

The current Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) contract expires June 30. Under the contract, the company provides maintenance, supply, transportation and food services at Fort Eustis.

“With our nearly 30 years of experience supporting our warfighters here at Fort Eustis, and the local community, we look forward to continuing work on this vital contract,” said Jo Garcia, Northrop’s technical services program manager for the contract in a statement.

Northrop is among three firms to submit bids for the contract renewal, said Josephine Garcia, the company’s program manager for the contract. She said the company “is confident we are going to get it back,” and will not have to cut those positions.

Northrop’s Technical Services sector has held a contract to provide maintenance, supply services, transportation and food services to the post for more than 20 years, Garcia said.

Because the contract is scheduled to end in June, the company was required to submit a notice to the Virginia Employment Commission to comply with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

“We were required under the contract to submit a notice to the state,” Garcia said.

Garcia said Northrop hopes to learn of a decision by the end of the month.
