Washington D.C. Jobs, Unemployment Increase

As the District’s unemployment rate continued to increase, a dismal number of Washington, D.C. jobs were added during May.

The District of Columbia saw its unemployment rate climb from 9.9 percent to 10.7 percent during May, which is higher than the national unemployment rate of 9.4 percent.

However, the District did manage to add a few hundred jobs. The District had a total non-farm employment of 702,700 workers during May, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 702,400 workers during April, but a .3 percent decrease from last year.

The manufacturing industry took the biggest hit when compared to last year. That industry employed 1,300 workers during May, the same as during April, but a 23.5 percent decrease from last year.

Other industries that saw an over-the-year jobs decrease during May include:

  • mining, logging and construction by 5.4 percent
  • information by 8.5 percent
  • financial activities by 2.8 percent
  • professional and business services by 3.1 percent
  • other services by 1.1 percent

The District had three industries that added jobs during May when compared to lat year. The education and health services industry employed 107,700 workers during May, up from 106,700 workers during April and a 5.2 percent increase from last year. The leisure and hospitality industry employed 58,400 workers during May, up from 57,900 workers during April and a .9 percent increase from last year. The government industry employed 236,900 workers during May, up from 236,000 workers during April and a 1.1 percent increase from last year.
