Spotlight on STEM jobs in Pennsylvania

Posted on November 6, 2017

A state tour is putting the spotlight on STEM jobs in Pennsylvania.

The Wolf Administration’s ‘Jobs that Pay’ tour highlights the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educational and career opportunities at Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center in Plains Township.

Cipriani met with students, faculty and representatives from the Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board and PA CareerLink Luzerne County at Wilkes-Barre and discussed the importance of training individuals to meet current and future STEM workforce needs across the commonwealth.
“Pennsylvania ranks in the top 10 states for STEM jobs, and vibrant career and technical programs, like this one, provide a pathway to these in-demand STEM-related occupations,” said Cipriani. “They benefit local economies by providing job seekers with valuable, hands-on training in various science and technology fields that lead to family-sustaining jobs and create pools of highly-skilled, qualified talent to meet regional employment needs.”
The ‘Jobs that Pay’ tour is an effort by state agencies to promote good-paying, family-sustaining jobs and career paths available to job seekers across the commonwealth, and to listen and learn from employers and employees about workforce development needs.
“We were very excited to have Deputy Secretary Cipriani visit our school and see how we are preparing today’s students for wage sustaining futures in high priority occupations,” said Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center Director Dr. Tony Guariglia.  “Our partnerships with both the PA CareerLink® and the Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board are providing post-secondary opportunities in STEM-related, in demand occupations such as nursing and welding.”
The Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical Center provides high quality, competency based education to its students. Programs include computer information technology, law enforcement/police science, and warehouse management.
